Overview
Veterinarians sometimes use benzodiazepines, but human tablets vary widely in strength. Small pets can become excessively sedated, have breathing depression, or paradoxical agitation. Alcohol or other sedatives increase risk.
Symptoms
Sedation, wobbling, weakness, slow breathing, hyperexcitability (some pets)
Typical onset
20 minutes–2 hours
Formulations
Sublingual and generic tablet sizes differ; “bars” may be high dose.
What to do
Contact your veterinarian or emergency service for any uncertain ingestion. Monitor breathing and ability to stand.
