Diphenhydramine-only products (Benadryl) — medication safety for dogs and cats
Call your vetReference for: dogs and cats.
Overview
Diphenhydramine appears in many formulations, not all of which are safe as-is. Some “sleep” products pair diphenhydramine with acetaminophen, alcohol, or other drugs. Liquid children’s products vary in concentration. Do not guess dosing from internet charts — ask your veterinarian before giving anything.
Symptoms
Sedation or paradoxical agitation, dry mouth, fast heart rate (dose/product dependent), vomiting
Typical onset
30 minutes–3 hours
Formulations
Benadryl cream is topical — different risk than oral; still prevent licking.
What to do
If your pet chewed a bottle or unknown tablets: contact your veterinarian or poison control with product photos. If a vet already prescribed diphenhydramine for your pet, use only that product/strength.
