Antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs) — medication safety for dogs and cats
EmergencyReference for: dogs and cats.
Overview
Commonly prescribed in people and sometimes in pets — but human strengths and extended-release forms are not interchangeable. Dogs may chew bottles; cats may bite certain capsules. Serotonin-related syndromes and cardiovascular effects are possible with overdoses or combinations.
Symptoms
Agitation, tremors, fast heart rate, fever, seizures, vomiting
Typical onset
1–12 hours (XR formulations may delay)
Formulations
Venlafaxine exposures are frequently high risk in pets; extended-release beads complicate absorption.
What to do
Seek emergency guidance immediately after unknown ingestion — quantity matters. Bring packaging.
