Common questions

About this tool

  • When should I take my pet to urgent care instead of waiting?

Seek urgent care if your pet has trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, cannot urinate, collapse, pale gums, severe pain, bleeding that will not stop, suspected toxin ingestion, or symptoms that are getting worse quickly. If you are unsure, call us — we can help you decide.

  • Is this symptom checker a diagnosis?

No. This tool offers general education and triage-style guidance. It does not replace a physical exam, tests, or a veterinarian’s judgment. Use it as a starting point, then call or visit when appropriate.

  • Can I use this for a cat and a dog the same way?

The tool asks whether you have a dog or a cat first, because some risks — especially urinary blockage in male cats — differ by species. Always answer for the pet you are worried about right now.

  • What if the tool says “monitor at home” but I still feel worried?

Trust your instincts. If something feels off to you, call Utah Veterinary Emergency Center anyway. We would rather answer a question early than have you wait too long.

  • What are Utah Veterinary Emergency Center’s hours?

We are open daily from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm for urgent care and appointments. For life-threatening emergencies outside those hours, call our number for guidance and referral to a 24-hour facility if needed.

  • How is this different from the toxic substance checker?

The toxic substance checker focuses on possible poisonings and common toxins. This symptom checker helps you think through illness signs like vomiting, limping, or breathing changes. Both are educational — when in doubt, call us.
